POSTURE CRIMES - CROSSED LEGS

When you cross your legs, your hips tilt and twist. Hip tilt and twist compress the ribs and lowback, driving pressure into the low back. Compression at the lowback, rounds the back, causing the ribs to sag, the shoulders to round and the abs to collapse. Crossing your legs is voluntary collapse, like saying to gravity, “I give up.”


Your muscles don’t want to give up! They want to give you strength!


Muscles only collapse when you’re dead; or when ill-informed habits have imposed unnatural collapse upon them in the name of comfort, or fashion (looking cool). The biggest gravity defying muscles in the body are the thighs. The thighs work in partnership with the glutes (buns) and hamstrings.

The uncrossed side is unable to produce strength because the hip tilt and twist confuse the glutes into believing they are cushions not muscles. The glute muscles rule the junction of the body’s heaviest bone – the femur (thighbone) with the body’s widest bone – the hips, and the body’s most important bone – the spine, from which all the body’s nerves emerge.

Crossing the legs tilts and twists the hips, leading to ankle, knee, hip, and low back pain.

Heel spurs, weak ankles, low back pain don’t have to happen! We can look on sitting as an athletic event for which we can acquire the necessary strength, skill, and endurance to make upright springy sitting an effortless expression of abundant strength. Our muscles know how to do this! All we need to do is agree with our muscles’ innate design for abundant strength and spring.
